An update for Final Fantasy XV has arrived and I know Mystik especially will be interested in this one, as it outlines some basic combat controls:

And a new video full of gameplay has come out (note: the gameplay in the video starts around 34mins):

I'm really interested in the mechanics, as the whole idea of having an option on how you play is really ambitious. Just a basic example, you can either hold down the attack button and let the game control combos and attacks, or you can repeatedly press the attack button to time your own attacks.

What interests me is the possibility of playing the game in 2 distinct ways using this, as holding down the button means that you'll probably have less control of your moves, but it gives you time to focus on your overall strategy in combat, while the hitting the button repeatedly might mean that you will have to concentrate on your combat at that moment in time, but you can achieve more damage using skill. At least that's what I'd hope.

Also, I love how Square have made efforts to engage fans, either by regularly giving these updates on the game or developer diaries with key people on the project. It's a massive improvement from even about year ago when Square was essentially silent on the game other than announcing it's now FF15 and not FFV13. It's something I wish Milan would do much better.

I have watched that play-through twice and I think I just need to come around to the reality that it won't be like what I'm used to in a Final Fantasy game. I am used to turn-based FF games where inevitably you end up with a party where one character has really good at healing, another at magic attacks, another at physical attacks, etc.

As an action RPG, the model is obviously different and I need to wrap my head around that. The way you encounter and fight random enemies does look quite exciting. All the characters seemed to use primarily physical attacks but I did see some cool abilities like dodging and warping, etc. Is there any video in English though? My Japanese is clearly not as good as yours Big Grin

I think you will still have roles, just less defined than past FF games. The combat is clearly different, but bear in mind that this doesn't mean all future games will be ARPGs, as the director has said the ones he works on will be, but others might have different ideas.

About the lack of magic attacks and primarily physical attacks. The director has said that there will be magic in the game, just they've not built it yet. Also, the game is 60% complete now, but it's expected there'll be a sharp jump in the next phase of development. This video is purely to show off the demo that will come out with Final Fantasy Type 0 HD.

Sorry, not aware of an English video translation, but will update you if I find anything. Trust me, your Japanese is as good, if not better, than mine Wink

Some big news on the Final Fantasy XV front, the press have had their first chance to actually play the game and the response is pretty impressive:

Sounds like the game's incredibly ambitious and has some mental yet awesome ideas in the combat. There seem to still be some technical issues, though the demo to be released with Type 0 will be a later build with hopefully some of these resolved.

Worth watching the video in the first link, it gives some nice footage of the demo being played.

Thanks for the news clips, Dev. The videos look good and according to the writers, they managed to keep enough of the FF feel while innovating at the same time. I know I'll buy it anyway but I think as more information is released, I'm beginning to like it more and more. I like that one reviewer touched on the disappointment of not being able to control each character but it seems the AI is smart enough so you won't miss it too much.
