Football Games 2016
#41
I spent a two hour commute yesterday watching PES 2016 videos on youtube and the first thing I realised was that the game doesn't look that great from far- from the in stands camera that we play with. Up close it looks fantastic but we as players we are going to spend 95% of the in game time with the TV camera.

The addition of Curva however was a great idea however. Once you import actual real life chants it will certainly make up for a great experience. I had done it in FIFA12 and nothing fires you up like hearing chants of Forza Milan Vinci Per Noi when you are a goal down in the game.

Master league has definitely improved but I doubt it is as good as FIFA which IMO is a much more engaging experience. The interface however looks better than before (Last PES I played was 2013) and for me personally, Interface and fonts etc make a huge difference. . I just hope they have reduced the amount of 'clicks' required and make navigation smoother.

I'll only explain the bold parts as we both agree on the rest..

Button mapping are the same with FIFA, they come with many options.
the thing is with FIFA you can adjust keys in-game. while in PES I couldn't find such option. besides like I said, the "ESC" button should have been a default, this simply shows how much of a poor port it is for the PC.

Player's movement are good, actually close to reality but for one aspect.
for instance, let's say I'm controlling Montolivo.. standing there in the middle circle waiting to make a pass and he sees an opponent running at him.. he should be quicker to turn around to dribble away from the opponent. that was slow, and almost always lost the ball.

Again the passing might be because the opponent was pressing hard. yet I don't believe that's the case.
I mean switching play from side to side requires low ground passes through all of the defenders, otherwise I lose the ball. my player doesn't even challenge.
On ground passes, again, I felt like the opponent was too close to my players and was always well prepared to intercept any pass going near him.

Defending was also horrendous on FIFA for that matter. while both games promise tighter defense, they both fail to deliver. too much space to exploit in the middle.

but like I said last year. both games are coming closer to each other with Konami catching up. Yet they seem too afraid to take a risk and try something new.
Can't understand why they didn't get English leagues licenses though...

Besides, I'm basically now focused on my Football Manager career Big Grin
3 seasons, did a double, won everything in my second/third season.. and also breaking the all time unbeaten-streak(history 58,I went on 63 unbeaten streak).
and now doing a second unbeaten-run! Sagrin

The button mapping issue sounds like a PC thing, I'm really in no position to comment. On consoles, it's essentially the same level of control for both PES and FIFA.

Perhaps how you try to turn away from an opponent is what's makes it slow? Basically, moving at different angles triggers different animations, some take longer than others to complete and leave you more susceptible to losing the ball (much like how in real life, moving in some directions takes longer than others due to how the body adjusts). I know they've implemented a system where animations don't always need to complete and can change depending on how you move, but I think certain actions leave you more vulnerable than others. If you're used to FIFA, this could feel sluggish, because FIFA doesn't have as many animations and so player movement is more electric, feeling more responsive to the player as a result.

Not sure why you're having the difficulty you are with passing if I'm honest, I've found it quite comfortable to put together good passing moves. It could be due to the tactics, especially if the system is stretched. Games can get scrappy though, but that's part of the parcel of simulating the real thing, games can be scrappy sometimes.

Again with defence, I really don't know, I've never had a big issue with PES. FIFA I've had more difficulty with in the past, mostly because I get frustrated with the AI and the positioning of teammates.

On English licenses, I believe the issue is FIFA have an exclusive license deal (which they've had for years now) and really there's nothing the PES team can do anything about it. Simply put, the license isn't available for them to get. I think if it was, they'd get it in a heartbeat as it's a massive advantage for FIFA. PES does get most licenses it can, but there are a couple of major leagues it can't. It has got the Champions League license ahead of FIFA and they announced they got the Euro 2016 license ahead of EA too (first time ever that's happened).

Thanks for the video somedevil.

I spent some more time with the PES demo last night and I am almost sold. I can see why Dev likes it so much. The level of control on the way your team plays is so detailed that it's almost daunting. I went through the menus and you can setup everything from attacking to defensive formations, they way you build up play, how you transition, etc.

In my eyes, it most certainly plays as a better football SIM. The movement off the ball was jaw dropping - and really worked out well with my style of play. The matches I played felt more like real life football than a video game (if that makes any sense). Whereas in Fifa, you could probably never touch the tactics menu and be fine, I get the feeling that in this game you'll need to tinker throughout the game to be able to win consistently. Even the computer changes formation and tactics throughout the match (and I find it weird that they actually notify me of this change. Maybe it can be disabled.

Like I said, I'm about 90% sold right now. I just need to look at the Master League to see if I like it since that's probably the mode where I'll be spending the most time. Not sure what other modes exist tbh..

Yeah the tactical depth impressed me along with the AI, which is imo one of the most underrated (or unmentioned) aspects. As you say, the movement is excellent, really something I think the game stands out on.

That point relates to what I said about FIFA earlier. Player movement feels quicker in FIFA, but I don't think PES feels slower per se, the reason being that in PES you can move the ball around really quickly with the way the players move, while in FIFA I found I was often waiting for runs to be made.

Master League sounds like it's improved, but if it's like previous years, don't expect anything amazing. For a good number of years, FIFA's career mode has been significantly better than ML.

I don't have any issue with the pace in PES at all. However, do you find your players get tired faster in PES? Maybe I am so used to holding down the sprint button in FIFA that I am trying to play the same way in PES and killing my players' energy reserves.

Also, I know that people have said that it's possible to download patches to get the full licenses and stuff. Does that apply only to the PC version or also the consoles?

When I play I find I seriously need to consider subs from around 70 minutes, as players are tiring. I think it's about right though, that's the case in real life too mostly.

On patches, it's generally always been available on consoles as option files. Basically, it's download and save an option file which has all the editing done to make it match real life. It's always been available on every version I've played since the PS2 era, so I think it's safe to assume it will be on this one too.

i was wrong, there is an autosave option in pes. you just need to enable it manualy for some reason.

There is an Italian option file available for PES and If you play ML with Milan, I'd suggest you download that. They have accurate stats for most players and do Serie B as well. So the information is rather on point as its actually made by people who watch Italian football.

They also do faces for lesser known players and overall, do a good job in terms of Italian football. I had used it for my PES 2013 save and I preferred it much more to other option files made by Non-Italian people.

Thanks for confirming Stitch, I thought that was the case. I think they've done that for years, though I'm stretching my memory a little.

Somedevil, thanks for the tip. I always tended to download the most commonly used one to get the real names etc, but it sounds like that might be a good one to use.

pes is too unrealistic tho. i've powered through one season in the last few days (played about half of the games, simulated the other half), and my team is: perin, de sciglio, manolos (or whatever the name of that greek defender from roma is), staam, lahm, yaya toure, matuidi, pogba, neymar, roberto baggio and mohamed salah. i've won serie a in my first season, dropped in 1/16 of the cup, and in the semi finals of europa league (not sure why is milan in europa league at all).
