A year ago I would have said sell him or use him as a bargaining chip. But honestly, he's not too bad as a back up as when he's given an extended chance, he's done decently enough. At first, all the chances he was getting were with the "2nd string" team and he struggled. But when put among the starters as was the case a couple weeks ago, he looked decent and not out of place.
Also, keeping in mind that Bakayoko, Montolivo, Bertolacci, and possibly Kessie and Calhanoglu may leave this summer...we will need players in the midfield to be back ups. The guy doesn't cost much in terms of salary, we can't get any cash for him since his contract is expiring, so might as well renew his deal and keep him in the squad. He's a cheap back up that's serviceable.
