IMO one of the few CMs who can truly conduct a team.
He's quicker, more combative and better defensively than pirlo every was. Pirlo has more range of passing, possibly more vision. Modric plays more like xavi than pirlo though. Almost a xavi/iniesta hybrid.
I think I might prefer him to hernanes because he plays at a higher tempo than hernanes (and pirlo for that matter). Kind of a more modern take on the maestro CM position...
yes, he is a lot quicker than Pirlo and plays at a much higher tempo, he has to due to the nature of the English game. He lacks Pirlos ability to dictate a game and is not as deliberate as Pirlo. Pirlo is more deliberate but at the expense of tempo and quickness.
Like others have alluded, he is a quick passer and distributor mostly, whereas Pirlo is a primarily a metronome for the team.
Imagine Pirlo(in his prime) playing in the premier league in totenham, how much would he accomplish? he wouldn't get much time on the ball, his distribution would be too slow, his tempo too slow, the players around him would not be as intelligent and experienced to work with his playing style and thinking, he would probably end up on the bench in no time, he would have trouble communicating with the others etc.
