He will IMO. Abate have improving his defensive skill a lot under Allegri so player like Merkel, who like to always move a lot, is hardworking and should be more clever than Abate, should be able to develop his defensive ability. Plus he is much younger than Abate.
But now, Merkel is not yet squad rotation player, still 3rd. choice for certain position aka player who can step in to the line-up when others are injured. Next season if he improves a lot especially his tactical knowledge, he could be 2nd. choice. It is clear that his weakness is his little experience (tactical knowledge).
