I was used to Berlusconi spending like crazy. It is awful feeling - rich to poor is so much worse than always remaining poor - you are so lucky for that reason.
Yes, today's Man City kinda resembles that. Except with Berlusconi who actually knows about football, it was instant success for us. I am sure that many other teams and their fans hated us too (or at least were very jealous). Good thing we didn't have Internet back then, otherwise I really don't think I can handle all the cyber-hatred.
