Another reason is we don't have Pirlo now, so no need to have a bodyguard for him
Van Bommel & Ambrosini are our CDM's. Gattuso is a RCM/LCM and will NOT play every game (hopefully). We need more players like Seedorf (5 years ago) & Boateng now. Dynamic Midfielders who can both defend and attack.
I think Allegri can satisfy your need. He doesn't have the money to buy players
but he can train them to be more two-way. Gattuso has become more two-way under Allegri. He is helpful in attack. Both of his goals last season are pure luck
but the assists are class, the equalizer in Super Coppa started with his determination. He is not the world class game breaker anymore, but he is still very useful.Flamini is already a two-way. Without his bad positioning, bad technique, bad injuries... he can be a great player

IMO, we don't replace Pirlo with Aquilani, we replaced him with Van Bommel. They are of different kinds, but both are world class. Van Bommel only has a silver medal in WC, but he has won more club trophies.
Without Pirlo and with an improved Gattuso, there is no pure one-way midfielder in Milan. We can have more dynamic mid. So I prefer dynamic player. Parolo is OK, Pedro Leon is also OK because he has a strong body, he can learn to defend. Busquet, Kherida, Schweinsteiger, Obi Mikel,... are more talented in attack, but become successful at DM.
