RE: Summer mercato 2015 - ElMago99 - 05-25-2015

Hello, Friends!

It's been a long time since last post. The main reason is busy with work, and also, admittedly, uninterested in Milan. They changed channels and now it costs too much to watch them, and I can watch online but it's still not as good as it could be. Also, having them in 10th and 11th place, I really have to admit I'm a bit uninterested.

We've discussed the team for years now, and I am sorry but Berlusconi & Galliani are 100% to blame for this disaster. It seems to get worse and worse, and I wouldn't be surprised if we end up in 12-15th place next year. Berlusconi needs to sell the team- the entire team. I'm afraid it won't happen until he passes.

I can't even make recommendations for the squad because I don't know the players as much as I did in previous seasons, but also because it's unrealistic to think we will buy anyone. Berlusconi guaranteed the Scudetto this year, and we're not even in the top 10. It's beyond embarrassing.

They've tarnished their legendary status and now B&G who once were known to be a great team, who ran Milan for decades, is now a laughing stock.

We had a the base of a good team with Ibra and Thiago Silva, and then when we got rid of them it was all downhill.

There was a slight positive year when we have SES-Balotelli-Niang in attack. I thought we were building a youth project like Arsenal and that those 3 were explosive and could grow together for years to come. And then one got injured and we got rid of the other 2... I still don't know why...???

The midfield has been bad for almost a decade now... ever since Pirlo and Gattuso and Seedorf left. Montolivo is not the same player, but again I don't blame him.. He had better players at Fiorentina.

I don't know what else to say, I'm ashamed and embarrassed for this team. A new owner and 90% new players are needed. The ones we thought were going to be great (SES, DES, Monty, Balo, Niang, etc) they've completely ruined. Who else will they ruin?

Somebody decided to start a Mandzukic rumour.

Welcome back Elmago, glad to see you post. On feeling uninterested, I think most just agree.

My only problem with De Sciglio in the center is his lack of physical prowess. But it would be amazing, if he could excel in the center. We badly need a rock solid presence there.

As for Montolivo, I am not too hot on him. If we keep him, at least we mustn't expect him tor run the team. His patterns are rather predictable and he needs better, technical players around him to excel. Jose Mauri? But is he ready for the big time. Only time will tell.

Allan would be a great option but I recall reading that Juve have the hots for him. Honda? Not on the wings. We need proper wingers. Honda isn't one. Same with Niang. If he comes back, then not on the wings please. The guy is a #9.

On Agazzi I'm just meh, it's third choice.

On DES, here's a bit of a post I made not too long ago in the player thread

Too much emphasis is being placed on the physical qualities of defenders rather than other technical and mental qualities. Take some of the great defenders of history, such as Beckenbaur, Sammer, Baresi, Tassotti and Fabio Cannavaro. None were particularly big, yet all were considered some of the great defenders of the past. Interesting fact is that De Sciglio is actually taller and often heavier than these names.

It wouldn't hurt De Sciglio to put on a bit of muscle and be more aggressive when challenging an opponent for the ball, but fundamentally on a purely athletic level, there is no reason why he can't be a top level CB.

Finally, what convinces me that De Sciglio could be a success at CB is the similarities he shares to another legendary defender to don the red and black. Some might think I'm talking about Maldini, but actually I'm referring to Billy Costacurta. The strengths and qualities of Costacurta and De Sciglio are remarkably similar, although with De Sciglio having more pace and Costacurta having better tactical qualities. Their weaknesses are also quite similar as Costacurta never had the greatest of acceleration and wasn't the best at crossing while running down the flank. Interesting to note that both are also the same height and weight.

As a result I believe De Sciglio can transition into a CB. I wondered what others might think.

Basically I did a little research and really when compared to many great defenders, physically he's pretty comparable, I think it comes down to how he uses his body and attitude. Baresi was smaller and Costacurta was identical and yet no one feels they were lacking in physical prowess. I also say this from experience, as I prefer playing defence, but physically am a similar size to Baresi, yet rarely am physically overwhelmed because I've got a good understanding of how to use my body and weight.

Thing is, I think that's why there's a dearth in quality CBs today, because there's a focus on looking at guys that are big and strong, yet lack many of the key skills to be a great defender.

On Montolivo, I think when in an organised group with good players around him that compliment him, he can do really well. That's why I propose he have technical players around him.

With Mauri, I would expect him to be a squad player, not a starter, which I think he's capable of doing.

Yeah I heard about Juve's interest in Allan. It came about after he faced them and totally dominated Pogba. Thing is, I think if Milan give him guarantees about a serious project which he's an invaluable part of, where he also gets to play with fellow Brazilians Thiago Silva and Firmino, then he could be more convinced to join than going to Juve where he's got no guarantees on his role.

On Honda, I think playing wide and playing as a winger are totally different. Basically, I would like to see his qualities made use of and him given the freedom to express himself, by using his abilities as a playmaker. He might start wide, but I wouldn't expect him to stay there especially with Abate overlapping.

Finally on Niang, I've always thought he should be developed as a striker, but didn't include him in my squad as I think he needs to play and grow. Plus he just can't be relied on as a goalscorer for Milan yet.

Thanks Xu and Dev

Ancellotti was just sacked by Real Madrid

Ridiculous to sack a coach a year after he won UCL ....

Very interesting what you say about De Sciglio. I think I will have to watch some old matches with Costacurta. When i worry about Mattia's lack of physicality, I am mainly worried about him against strong men. Like Ibra, Toni or trouble makers like Tevez. But yes a bit os muscle won't hurt him. The main question is who helps him develop as a CB. I however really liked how he played in the Confed cup the year before last. I still believe that if he can stay fit and get the right kind of guidance he can be one of the best in the world.

As for Niang, will he want to go on another loan? I remember seeing a few Forza Genoa tweets on his Twitter and it seems he really likes it there. I just hope we don't trade him for good. Well even if we do, it's just Preziosi Big Grin

When I think about how to rebuild from the bottom- I realize what an absolute mess we are in.

RE: Summer mercato 2015 - ACMILAN1983 - 05-25-2015

Somedevil, dealing with big players is about reading the situation and anticipating their movement in conjunction to the movement and position of the ball. The advantage they have also can be a disadvantage when factoring in cadence (gait), as small players can "react" faster in a small space

For example, there's a Chinese martial art known as Wing Chun, which was essentially designed as self defence for women and is all about quick, short and economical movement in small spaces when fighting a bigger opponent. A simple punch is short and straight, more like a jab than a swinging punch. The idea is that while an opponents punch will take time to generate the velocity to be effective, the straight punch in Wing Chun will have a lot of speed to generate power. Smaller individuals (like I said it's designed for women) often find this easier as they have faster cadence to work in a small space.

For footballers it's the same, as while bigger players can use their physical size and strength to dominate, a smaller player can act more economically within a small space, especially if they're good with timing their challenges. That's why you see a lot of smaller destroyers often winning the ball from bigger opponents when they first receive a pass, as in the time it takes for a large opponent to control the ball and adjust their body to do what they want with it, a smaller player can usually work themselves into a position in between the opponent and the ball. Likewise, this is why bigger players can often appear slow compared to smaller players.

Dealing with a guy like Tevez requires different qualities, but it comes down to my original point of understanding how to use your body effectively.

On who could help these guys develop, it's one of the thoughts I had in mind when suggesting Costacurta as a possible assistant coach, especially for DES.

On Niang, I think.it comes down to his will. Problem is I don't think he can be relied on in such an important role yet and really it's just a waste for him to be benched at Milan. A loan would seem the most prudent option for the club. If he doesn't agree he'll probably be sold and the club would be at fault for managing him so poorly until now. Same for Fossati, if he's gone this summer the club will be at fault.

RE: Summer mercato 2015 - xudong - 05-25-2015

Dev, interesting opinion. I suspect that you had Baresi and Cannavaro in mind, who weren't exactly tall or big as other "typical" central defenders. Defending used to be an art in Calcio, but the deterioration has been saddening.

I still maintain my curiosity if de Sciglio could ever turn out to be an outstanding central defenders, of course we may never know if no one tried it. One thing I do feel that de Sciglio needs is mental toughness. Sometimes I wish he could be a bit more aggressive (or even, "mental" like Mexes). For example, when he got the red card, he just stood there, looked sad and dejected, and turned around and left the pitch. I wish I could see more grit on him. Lastly, perhaps most importantly, he also needs better luck with injury.
