I'm with you, nefremo. I find it odd that it's only now that he is no longer an undisputed starter that he can't take the pain anymore. Call me cynical but I find the timing fishy...

Why do you say that?
These are profesionals that make millions of euros. They make more in a year that most of us will make in a lifetime. When a decision is make by the coach, you respect it, keep working hard, because your check or millions doesn't stop coming because you are now on the bench.
If he is legitimately hurt, than ok. But to me it seems like a problem that he was willing to deal with until he was a starter. Now that he is not he is basically showing the finger to the club, his teammates, his coach, and the supporters!

I thought that it was one face-saving way of respecting the coach's decision? Am I the only one that thinks so? I really failed to see how he was being disrespectful and unprofessional. Am I being naive?

Well obviously it can't be proven. I'm not discounting that he has an injury problem. The problem I am questioning is that he said he's had this problem for 4 months. He chose to keep playing (he was the undespputed starter during this time). Now that he is not starting and that his ego has been shot down by a 16 year old (yes, I do believe the stories that came out a couple of weeks ago that he threatened to leave if he was replaced by a 16 year old).....all of a sudden the injury/tendinitis that he had no problem playing with became unbearable and he needs to take time off!
Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting people should play with injuries. They are human after all. But willing to play with it for 4 months and all of a sudden pulling the plug is weird to me.
@ PerSempre.....I think he'll leave in January. Or at least he'll try to. The club may push to have him him until June though.

I missed that.
back to playing with injury though, I think it is possible. I know that it has been done--Weah against Bordeaux (1995-96), Gattuso against Inter (2009-2010), and even this past game, Montolivo seemed to be playing with pain too.
Maybe Lopez really has been playing with injury. Maybe he is accepting that Donnarumma is better at the moment, and is willing to come back stronger. That's what I think, and how I like to think too.
I hope that he will stay, but if he does leave in January, I hope that we can get some nice cash or get some good player (midfielder) in exchange.

Am I the only one who thinks about the opposite?
Now that he know there's a 16-year old who can replace him, he can leave peacefully without worrying about how the team will hold on without him.

If I lost my position to someone more than half my age, with the resume Lopez has, I'd certainly feel butthurt. Even more if I had to suffer through pain to keep my position, and then they replace me with someone so young and inexperienced.. I'd certainly at least try to stop the pain.
Nothing against Donnarumma, I think he did great and will be even better, its gonna be really good for him to have first team experience this early in his career, I'm just putting myself in Lopez's position.

I'm not overly bothered by this story. Diego Lopez has naturally claimed the injury is real, which may be true. I suspect he could leave in January and it looks difficult for him to regain his first team spot particularly soon, so in that respect it may be of benefit for him to get treated for this now, both for him (he's not playing and now's not a bad time to get treatment) and maybe for Milan (it'll be easier to sell him if he's fully fit).
Truth is, if Donnarumma can maintain his performance level and stays healthy, this is a non-issue for us. Even if Donnarumma has to be replaced, we still have a solid keeper in Abbiati.
