I actually completely agree with Eranio. I've said a number of times that at this point I think El Shaarawy needs to be used in a deeper role, rather than as a forward, to develop his game and build on his strengths. That isn't to say he's a trequartista, though I can see him become more like Donadoni in the future.

That's at least worth a try. When El Shaarawy first came out of nowhere, he reminded me a bit of both Kaka and Roberto Baggio.

he can not perform as trequartista, he has other qualities. IMO he's a second striker, and he can be a great partner for strikers like Balotelli and Pazzini.
SES his bad form after the winter break wasnt becouse of balotelli, I'm sure they can play together, he was just out of form, even before Super Mario arrived his form wasnt good.

I wouldn't even mind him leading the line,. there's a temptation to drop him back a bit because he has so many other qualities like long shooting, dribbling, pace and the idea is he could do everything from there and still allow another striker. but ideally, if you have a great player you should play him in as influential position as possible. Messi has all the qualities to play trequartista, ronaldo and bale both both had everything to be superb wingers, but those 3 really came into their own when given central attacking positions (Well, Bale is basically given freedom to be wherever he wants) because everything runs through them and they had the instincts and ability to really damage teams.
yeah, we have balotelli, and we should look at how we can have both on at the same time but ELS could be a 30-40 goal a season player if he develops and plays upfront in the middle. Balotelli could maybe be the one to play out wider.

Napoli away was his last good display. The harsh reality is El-Sha has been pretty feeble for well over half a year. Beginning to wonder if he'll ever regain form or if that purple period itself was just a total fluke.

El Shaarawy's done well in preseason imo. He's never been one to control games, even when he was performing like mad last season.

Dev and I have had a heated disagreement about SES, and he invited me to rebut his view that SES is a wide player, as opposed to goal-getting striker that I have suggested he is.
My opinion is he is dreadfully out of form and Dev's (and many others) is that he's not really a central striker type of player at all, it's not where he plays.
So, in response to this I'd like to provide 2 heatmaps from @milanello of SES's pitch positions in 2 matches this year - V Juventus in April and V Torino in May.
Balotelli featured V Torini and was absent as we know V Juve.
V Juve without Balo:

Those saying he's a wide player could argue he's being forced to play centrally due to Balo's absence.
But here's Torino:

With Balo he's till playing in the same position, centrally. Even more intensely than V Juve who had more of the ball than Torino did.
Up till November last year here's his positioning for his goals:

And a slightly unrelated stat is during his time as striker in the middle when in form, his numbers were better than Ibra's:

It is my utter opinion (backed up by the above stats) he's a central striker bang out of form. This isn't a personal attack, I'd love nothing more than last year's SES back, but he is not, imo, playing his best right now because his best work historically is through the middle.
I feel him being played slightly left right now is arguably hindering him. I see him running with the ball but usually losing it to right backs. And he's rarely getting into the positions he used to because his confidence is not what it used to be.
Sorry for the nerdy detail in this but I feel quite adamant about SES and hope he can regain his form centrally. It's where he's best when on form.
Hope you guys see my reasoning here.

If you search my posts back years I often say something simplistic. A person responsible for goals should be judged mainly by that and I don't necessarily have a problem with 'not tracking back' and or even 'not holding up the ball for others' for such a player. Again I admit this is simplistic view, not exactly practical for today's football, but we will burn the guy out if we expect him to be this or that. A kind of second striker supporting Balo can work well and I saw a great example of it in the PSV return.

I don't strictly disagree with any of this, but it doesn't quite address his position. The facts show he does his best work when in form and through the middle. The heatmaps above show whether with or without Balo he spends more time central than on wings.
Whether he's burnt out, off form - who knows. But his best work was and always has been through the middle.
Even as recently as May he was going central despite claims to the contrary. This not to say he never goes out wide. Of course he does. But so does Balo. Spent a LOT of time V Cagliari on the right swinging in crosses. But no one is going to convince anyone that's his natural position.
SES is a central striker who appears to be terribly out of form, and his recent matches where he's played wider are not getting his form back.
