From what I saw, Italy kind of deserved to be eliminated. They played dog crap soccer against Costa Rica, a team they by all means should have beaten; then they follow up with another lackluster, play for the draw performance against Uruuaguay. Refs are dumb and blind, but the refs didn't tell Italian defenders to mismark their man again and give up another header, did they? That is all on the players. Coach and FA chief can bitch all they want. They know they F-ed up this tournament. The players look out of shape and disinterested for most of the three games. That is not the refs' fault.

I don't think Prandelli played for a draw today. He knew Balotelli was isolated up front and decided to go with Immobile as a strike partner to give Balo some space. He also had to be careful with Uruguay's counter attacks so he went with the 3-5-2 as a compromise expecting the wingbacks to get up and down the pitch. Defensively Italy was solid for the majority of the game I would say. The quality of the crosses to Immobile and Balotelli simply was not good enough so Italy struggled to create chances.
Upon second, third - tenth looks, the Marchisio incident was clumsy and a little dangerous. Definite yellow..possible red depending on view point and intepretation of the "tackle". I still don't think Balo's yellow should have happened..but that is now water under the bridge.
Moving forward, Italy does have some exciting prospects from the last U-21 team (Insigne, Immobile, Verratti, Florenzi, etc) then when you include G. Rossi, El Shaarawy, De Sciglio & Darmian, Balotelli and others there is still hope for the future. Phase out some of the older players, incorporate these players for Euro qualifiers and Italy will be good as new.

More than many other, Italy will need a culture change if it will succeed without top CBs. Interestingly none of the names you mentioned are one. That will be a problem.

Italy deserve to go home for their overall performance, but they were unlucky in the last and final match.
- Marchisio was stupid to play like that too close to ref, but in such important match, players are quite nervous and a little over the top. Red is harsh.
- The deciding goal was not a header, but a lucky impact to Godin's shoulder. Italy defenders did enough to prevent all Uruguayans from having a good position.
- The ref was blind in Suarez & Chiellini incident, which is unintelligible.
Anyway, that is the past. The present & future:
- Prandelli said that Balotelli was a part of his technical project which has just failed. Maybe next coach is not so protective to the big boy.
- Suarez could be banned 2 years from international football, and the value of his image dropped. Good for Liverpool.

Suarez should be banned for life. This could have changed things for Italy.. we could have drawn...and then who knows.
However, I'm not delusional, as a die hard Italy fan regarding both Marchisio tackle (probably a red), as well as the way Italy played, which was really bad. The technical setup seemed wrong (as Prandelli suggested), the technique and first touches of the players dropped nearly 3-4 levels from the England game. Against England, we played well, showed good touches and the ability to keep the ball and create.. since then it's been just insanely awful.
I don't blame Prandelli for warning to put Balotelli at the forefront.. However, they just didn't create enough for him.. he looked alone, confused, and useless.
Also, the days of Gattuso, Nesta, Cannavaro, Zambrotta, Totti, Inzaghi, and Del Piero are over. Soon if not already for Pirlo too. We need to swallow that...and it's difficult.

I agree that Italy doesn't necessarily have the world's best defenders anymore but defending should really be more about the system and not the individuals. Brazil won 5 WC's without having the best defense on the planet. Speaking of the system, who will take over from De Rossi? He is already 30 and will be on his last legs by the time the next WC rolls around. Let's hope someone with quality and toughness pops up within the next few years for the CDM role.
I think Italy should adopt the 4-3-3 as the main formation going forward. There are plenty wide attackers and a couple great central midfielders to build the future team around. The fullback slots are pretty much golden with Darmian and De Sciglio bound to improve over the next few years. GK, CD and CF are a bit of a mystery at the moment but we'll see how things develop. I imagine Chiellini, Bonucci, Sirigu, Perin will probably be kept through to the next WC though.
