RE: Summer Mercato 2011 - abbeyleemania - 05-03-2011

i like both Falcao and Hulk a lot but i wonder where he'll play in starting line up...

We have room in midfield trio to make invesment...i always said that we should sign at least one 2 way midfielder...Players good in everything...

What could change if we sell Flamini and sign Gökhan inler as his replacement? Flamini's high wages are a problem... Flamini earns 4.5 m euros, a bench player... Thats the problem...

it seems we will sign Taiwo and Mexes...Defence will be set with them...Ganso will be signed...We could sign a vice ibra but thanks to Berretta we couldnt as well...

Then we focus on midfield trio... especially after Seedorf or Pirlo leaves... who'll be 2 way midfielder signing?

RE: Summer Mercato 2011 - Gabriel426 - 05-03-2011

Hernanes is the one that Milan should sign. Imagine him and Ganso with Boateng and MVB.

I actually agree with Berlu's comments about ball possession to some degree, in that it's necessary for killing off games like we saw against Bologna on the weekend. That said it won't be a key feature in our build up play as Allegri likes direct and quick attacking moves.

Very good point. It is also vital that we learn to keep the ball to ourselves and avoid all those goal chances to a side like Bologna.

One of our strong points has been our vertical attacking play. This applies very much to when we play smaller teams, as I've seen we manage to win against them despite they deploy the catenaccio. Many might say this is due to Ibra's qualities. While this is true we also have to look at the games we've played without him, which have been a few; we won those too.

Adding players capable of ball control doesn't necessarily mean we will become a ball possession team, à la Barça. If anything, granted Allegri keeps his philosophy, technically gifted players will just improve our quick attacking moves. The precision in their passes and their vision of the game will make everything go smoother.

I personally haven't seen that much of Hernanes and Inler, so I'm not sure what their defensive qualities are (especially Hernanes). If all they're good for is going forward and controlling the game, I don't really think we have solved any problems (granted we get Ganso too):

----------- Boateng -------------------
Ganso ------ --------- Hernanes/Inler
--------------DM--------------------------

Apart from those players being younger, I just don't see the difference from playing Seedorf and Pirlo. Not to mention the fact that our DM alternatives are Gattuso, Ambrosini and Van Bommel; all people past their prime. I don't mention Flamini here, since I don't feel he has the characteristics to play as the typical mediano.

So, aside from being more dynamic and younger, what do players like Hernanes or Inler add to our defense as opposed to playing Seedorf/Pirlo?

PS: Galliani has now said "Let's leave Ganso where he is, let's not disturb Santos". (http://www.gazzetta.it/Calcio/SerieA/Milan/03-05-2011/galliani-va-oltre-scudetto-801058197097.shtml)

70mil huh, does that mean there will be other big signings beside Ganso?

Dangerous way to work though, Silva and Abbiati have done more than enough as well to get us this scudetto, what if they want a pay rise to 6 mil?

RE: Summer Mercato 2011 - russo-neri - 05-03-2011

Regarding Flamini - remember we got him on a free transfer, so part of his salary is subsidised by the fact there was zero fee in transfers. Not saying he's worth 4.5, just reminding everone that there was a "discount" of sorts.

Regarding Berlu stating 50-70 million per year, I think he meant that's how much he paid over the last few years in total - that includes player salaries (maybe the utility bill too! haha). So don't assume that we have a 70 million transfer account waiting to be spent this summer. Furthermore, remember, we still owe 7 million on Boateng and another 24 million on Ibra - players we take for granted since they are already here.

Berlu might seriously open his wallet this summer (as intimated by Galliani today saying our transfer market will be Champions League worthy). But I just want to manage expectations by everyone here. We are not guaranteed Ganso and Hamsik and Hernanes and all the other speculated players in the media.

As always when it comes to things out of your control - hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

Not sure we add that much defensively.

I would give Van Bommel one more year. In general, i believe he's been performing above a decent level so far. When we signed him, i thought our midfield will resemble a bar brawl every now and then but he's been surprisingly calm and focused in some games. Plus i really like his positioning. I was the one calling him Darth Vader by the way before he arrives.

Gio, if we get Ganso, do you think Allegri is in for a tactical problem with him and Prince starting the matches? Truth is I haven't seen Ganso that much, so is he capable of playing the role of a left attacking midfielder and keep his position or does he like to be more on the axis, behind the strikers?

As for Boateng, I am impressed with his first term. I really wonder what kind of a next season lies in front of him. Maybe we ll get to see a guy who will stay with us for a long time. He adds power and lots of running that boy Prince. And I can't say he's not skilled...

RE: Summer Mercato 2011 - Ca Rossonero - 05-03-2011

Hernanes defensively ranks inbetween pirlo and seedorf in there primes 2003-6ish (Ie definitely can play in a 3 man and not be liability, especially if you got a more DM. When you add his posession ability (he truly is on par with those 2 and barca CMs and controlling ball) it's better.

Inler is better defensively, a good passer, but not as creative or visionary. About Inler, he's always in top 20 in Serie A of passes completed and attempted. Last year 20th, this year 5th 1451 completed out of 1756 (82.6%) which is on par with last couple years in terms of completion percentage. He drives udinese forward a bit more than asamoah. He also ranks top 20 in passes in other teams half with similar percentage. Inler to me is a bit like xabi alonso. Even that analogy i don't love because I think he's stronger defensively and xabi has a bit more range.

For the record, Pirlo has led serie A in all these numbers + completion percentage of his passes + least times tackled/disposed for years. People underestimate how good he is. A class above Serie A. If he's given the LCM with space he dominates. I'm sad we never saw him in La Liga cause I'm pretty sure he'd dominate like Xavi with spacing they give

RE: Summer Mercato 2011 - Gio-mania - 05-03-2011

There is no doubt in my mind Pirlo is one of the greats. In his prime I would say he is above the level of Xavi and Iniesta. The problem is that he is older now, and he doesn't run as much as our midfield would require. He is not the man who will guide us to the CL title next year. He could be a super-sub, but he would have to accept a much lower salary.

While I do love Hernanes attacking ability, I would probably take Inler over him considering he is better defensively. The passing skills Inler has will more than suffice, if we get a player like Ganso too.

Sputnik, I see Boateng as a pillar for our future squad. He has the physicality of a beast and as you say we cannot complain about his skill on the ball. On top of that he has the never give up attitude and he is young. Buying someone like Ganso, I would probably still see Prince in the attacking midfielder role, although he would fit well in the 3 man midfield too.

Boateng's unlikely mix of power and skill make him a very unique solution up front. Once again I should stress than I know nothing about Ganso, but I could see him playing in a 3 man midfield (maybe not necessarily to the left) to control our game from there. Then we would have a DM and a player like Inler who can put in the good pass. Creativity wise we would only have Ganso, but with Bommel, Prince and Inler we would have very accurate passers.

AC Milan will build a Champions League winning squad - Adriano Galliani
Galliani promises a squad to rival Real Madrid and Barcelona as he plans to strengthen Milan with some star players who will be able to deliver Europe's greatest club trophy
By Salvatore Landolina
May 3, 2011 1:10:00 PM
Quote:Milan CEO Adriano Galliani has stated that the league leaders are willing to splash the cash in the summer transfer window in order to build a squad worthy of winning the Champions League.

However, he said some players would have to be sold to raise funds for investment, as he looks to trim the squad.

"Of course ours will be a market for the Champions League which is an objective now more than ever," he told the press.

"One thing is for sure, we will have to reduce our squad because 31 players are too much. They will have to become 25 or 26."

One conundrum Galliani will have to deal with is the number of players whose contracts will expire in June such as Clarence Seedorf and Andrea Pirlo.

"We have not spoken to any players whose deals will end. We will once we reach our objective [the Scudetto]," he added.

"As for Seedorf, he will have to wait for the right moment."

Milan need just a point from their three remaining matches to clinch the Serie A title.

I'm going to assume Flamini will be sold if he doesn't take a huge wage reduction. I don't mind him if he was on 2 mil or so, he's valuable enough squad player but that is it. Senator's will all take a wage reduction or be gone. Sadly, I think Pirlo or Seedorf will be gone. Sokratis will probably be loaned or sold/co-owned to get someone. Bruno and Didac (who haven't established themselves) will likely be used same way, as throw ins to lower transfer fees. Strasser will likely be given to Genoa on loan (he's co-owned) to get much needed first team time. Players like Leggrotaglie will go. Maybe Bonera too

I think Pato, Thiago, maybe abate will get deserved raises too.

I imagine Taiwo and Mexes will be economically viable moves to save money, strengthen defense so we can add elsewhere.

I'm most curious what happens in midfield. If I had my way, one of pirlo/seedorf would go (sad), we keep ambrosini, gattuso, boateng. We sign 2 young central midfielders (in age range of boateng to flamini) giving us a nice balance of 3 veterans and 3 youngers, and get a proper AM. Hopefully Merkel continues his development with Fosatti, Calvano or others breaking in and eventually replacing senatores in a year or two.
@Gio-mania

the thing that's made pirlo/seedorf successful this year is because we only play 1 of them in a midfield with more dynamic players. They can still be hugely influential in a midfield like this because simply put, you just don't find many passers/playmakers of their ilk in football. It's great if we got Hernanes cause he is + he's dynamic but it's not required. Having Boateng and Flamini in midfield helps them a lot.

If you look atm an utd, the way they utilize scholes is the example. He's a similar player, who has slowed down quite a bit, but is still an exceptional passer. But playing with fletcher, valencia, anderson etc. who all move a lot, cover ground and provide options to pass to makes him useful.

like you said, if inler came. A midfield 3 of pirlo, inler, boateng would not be a defensive liability nor would it have major issues with static play which haunted us in previous years with pirlo, seedorf and ambro. But yes, Pirlo's time is declining and he needs more of a squad role than star role he's had in past. Still useful though. I'd rather keep him than go with a midfield of just athletic grinders like flamini, van bommel, boateng one we used which had real problems with creativity
