RE: European Super League - Arildonardo - 04-20-2021 How about a poll in here? For or against the Super League. European Super League - reza - 04-20-2021 poll added RE: European Super League - xudong - 04-20-2021 I think more options would make it more complete. For example, first, I think the ESL will not happen. If it does go ahead, I am kind of torn. I think there are a few others in the same camp too (i.e not viewing this as black or white). RE: European Super League - xudong - 04-20-2021 Or, reza, you should ask everyone to submit a 500-word essay to elaborate on their views. Due in 24 hours.
RE: European Super League - DrDejan - 04-20-2021 This s***storm started when they allowed clubs to be floated on the stock exchange. Those businesses don’t like uncertainty which is normal in football, one year you get the CL revenue - the next you’re without it. It was matter of time until they ask for unconditional CL participation, just for the sake of more even revenue stream. The combination of UEFA financial decisions, or more precise lack of decisions, compounded with the EU free market regulation, led to unsustainable system with ever-rising salaries, exorbitant agent fees, and uncertain revenue. Now, the richest clubs have found a sponsor to invest in the ESL infrastructure, they are luring the players with 55% share of the revenue, which is lower than current est. 80% but from a higher starting point est. 350M, and the pay per view channels are salivating at the prospect. It’s a great opportunity for the business, but devastating situation for the football associations and the medium and small clubs. It seems the only leverage for UEFA are the players. We’ll see what they’ll say and how they’ll act. Everything else is just business as usual between the federations and the clubs. RE: European Super League - reza - 04-20-2021 Everybody is required to post in this thread everyday. Very easy, just 5 words a day average. Meaningful words ![]() Seriously though, it is not black or white but the question is if this is a negotiating tactic then maybe teams are painting themselves in a corner. Is the kind of money they want really impossible without having the 'closed' league? Made up numbers but for example: Current CL gives each team 50 million ESL claims to give each team 100 million IF the 100 million is possible and available within the market UEFA can't negotiate it and distribute it to teams? If available of course UEFA can, probably with less effort than the teams negotiating it themselves. So the next step is teams wanting more control *plus* the more cash. In that sense there is really no reason for me to side with a ESL at all especially because I do not believe corruption will disappear without UEFA. RE: European Super League - Sampinjon - 04-20-2021 Allegedly ,on friday UEFA to kick three rebellions from CL and give trophy to PSG. Will be interesting to see if PSG will join SL on saturday... Also allegedly ,City and Chelsea to gave up on SL due to "negative reaction from supporters ,government and FA". RE: European Super League - nefremo - 04-20-2021 The biggest opposition is the guarantees. And I get that. I'm on board with that thought. I think if the SL clubs made a format that allows for promotion-relegation...many more people would be on board. As I said before....2 leagues of 20. Bottom 5 relegated, top 5 promoted. Each season, 5 teams, via qualification, get the opportunity to enter that 2nd division, and then of course, make their way up to the 1st division via promotion and ultimately fight for the SL title. The 1st year obviously, the leagues will be created/spots given....but after that you earn your stay, promotion or get relegated. So this way, the domestic leagues still hold weight as it would mean something to be the Champion of your country...but also, your participation in the ESL doesn't fully depend om the domestic performance, but on your performance in that said ESL (for clubs already in). Others on the other hand can get a chance to enter the 2md division based on domestic performance. Once they are in, like the others, they can earn their stay. Anyway....I know I'm far off the point here.....but what I'm saying is people would actually support the idea if there is some component of merit. Everyone is tired of UEFA/FIFA. RE: European Super League - Sampinjon - 04-20-2021 Yes ,but how many (quality) players club should have to be competitive on both fronts? (Everything else would lead to degradation of national leagues and massive ping pong effect) And how many clubs could afford that amount of players? That is insane amount of games per season. 38 games in SL, 38 in domestic division plus cup games. Even those "top" clubs in this current format will not be able to play SL and domestic divisions with strongest squads ,so most likely they're going to send reserves to play EPL ,Serie A ,etc from time time if not all the time... Which will also degrade (cynic would say to give chance for "others" to compete from trophies) domestic leagues.
