There is no promotion/relegation between the NASL and MLS, right? So there's no chance of them doing really well and ending up in the MLS.. Or am I understanding this system wrong

No, not in the traditional sense. 

But the MLS plans on expanding so they take in expansion teams, like Kaka's Orlando last year for example. 

I'm not 100% sure what the criteria is but the team has to show a youth system, a sustainable good attendance, a plan for a football specific stadium, be in a region where they want to expand the league, have good results in NASL, etc.

I've heard that Miami may be next in the list to join the MLS, so yes, Nesta could soon coach in the MLS. Atlanta is another city that has a chance.
